NSW Poetry Slam 06 Final - Members' Room, Mitchell Wing, State Library NSW - 07/12/06

Benito Di Fonzo walks ahead smoking a stick with disregard. Such is the state that he casually tosses the butt at the foot of the steps to the State Library of New South Wales, a bin only a few metres away. None of that though, smokers find they own their own rules to the environment and those in their vicinity. Die and we all die together, the ethos of those who sign up to the addiction.

Security guard stations signal The Members' Room of the Mitchell Wing as the locale of the NSW Poetry Slam Final. Nobody walks up the stairs to the Galleries, a misdirection in closed doors.

Toilet Door Poetry - The Live Experience - Barnet Long Room, Customs House - 01/04/06

Customs House on a Saturday afternoon in Circular Quay. People in the cafe on the lower floor clanging away with deep bottles of sparkling waters more powerful than those from a hose. Gulls on the pavers outside hunt down in three and the kicks aren't doing anything for they fear nothing now they have the taste of rat's blood.

Time again dissolves into the nothingness of quotes and pauses as the start post packs up and leaves. Gone by at least a half hour through the heavy curtains that catch the old lady right into a dehydrated state.

Sydney Poetry Slam 05 Finals - State Library of NSW Galleries - 08/12/05

Worlds collide at the State Library of NSW. In one spectrum, a largely over 35 crowd from the State Library's Under 35 club Christmas Party, void of all symbolism and dead fat men swinging from the ceilings. In the other, spectators on the hunt for the finals of the inaugural Sydney Poetry Slam; the bardic and cathartic rhythmic event of the year.

Seats allocate themselves to the faster set and those eager and hopeful to see festivities adhere to a sense of punctuality. Swinging back affords no comfort, the doubt of metal jutting through the shoulder blades keeping many honest and stable. Minutes pool into an hour as the photographer blinds everyone with a flash bulb that burns brighter than a sun on the back of a pasty Goth caught without sunscreen.

House-Cat Havoc versus Steel Wool - NSW Poetry Slam Challenge Bout - Knot Gallery - 08/07/05

Atrophe's party or the Poetry Slam? With pigeon shit covering every spot of open faced cement in the wings of the Knot Gallery, there was no contest. The Inaugural State Poetry Slam by the Word Wrestling Federation. There was also no place to stand without inhaling a rich strike of urine.

A battle of prime rhyme from the New South Wales line. Two teams against each other in an ages old classic battle of poetic licence. To the victor, the glory to represent against the sorry cases in Victoria later in August. Flowers more for the team short on score.

An Afternoon of Poetry - The Whitlam Library, Cabramatta - 20/05/04

Kicking off the Fairfield City Writers' Festival for its third year, The Whitlam Library in Cabramatta played host to An Afternoon of Poetry, one of the few events on the Sydney Writers' Festival programme that wasn't being held in or around the city streets.

Clear from the front desk of the library, the fragrant aroma of grilled meat and greasy kebab sticks smacked the nostrils expecting the accustomed hint of moldy carpet, chipping stone and dry books. Laid out on tables usually reserved for kids doing their homework, platters of sandwiches of the familiar kind. Vegetarian plates numbered twice and the chilled eggs looked like they were turning. Chicken and tuna fillings were fed into the cold warmth of rye and wholemeal and a couple of trays featured meat chunks holding tight with their might on the roasted sticks. Parts of the feasting mob were split down with those out for the poetry session and those out for free food in a place of books.

A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf

It seems that, because of the recent adaptation of another, different Virginia Woolf book, bookstores have been importing as many of her books as possible to cope with the current, and what will probably short lived, consumer demand. This is how I came to find and buy A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf.

I suspect that when the Gwyneth Paltrow movie based on the life of Sylvia Plath is released there will be a similar demand for her poetry. No matter, I am not reviewing consumer foibles, I am reviewing A Room of One’s Own.
