Such a beautiful production. Shame about all the patrons making off with all of the cough drops. Pity the coughers.

Of shadowy machinations and motives, witnesses to the triumph of love in the darkness of jealously and spite, The Sleeping Beauty is an almost gothic affair. Complete, undeniably, with romantic trimmings and an at times whimsical and soothing orchestral soundtrack.
Mystic and magically enthralling, the opening act is an otherwise sensual load of fear, of doubt and cunning. A stark contrast with the more humorous and fanciful elements between. The second act bathes the stage, the dancers and every inch of the Opera Theatre in a glow of sunshine and pure happiness.
Telly Savalas, in a strictly done up barber's outfit, stands at door 28 of the Opera Theatre not handing out sheets for Grand. Surly, off-guard and a little stand-offish, the man is not in the mood to show any signs of helpfulness. But he at least ushers people toward their seats.
Out from the break into the darkness, the slow moving beats of the piano push the theatre into a dream-like state. A lone woman falls toward the massive grand piano left of stage. A wonderful whisper of the keys accompanies the entry of the woman draped in black as she leans against the enormous shell. Breaking free, the night then takes on the life of imagination and interpretation.
From a whispering orchestra pit, the sweet sounds rise up into the night and toy with the company of the patrons as they brace themselves in the darkness of the Opera Theatre of the Sydney Opera House. There is a casting sheet with each seat and a synopsis of each act. Never mind that. Everything and anything is interpretive.
The first story of the evening is La Bayadère. Very cautious steps from a line of ballerinas fall as snow flakes from a mountain top. Their patter along is careful, though stilted. Emerging from the back curtain, the seemingly endless array of ballerinas flows down one after another into infinity.
