Ween - La Cucaracha

La Cucaracha is the brown-sounding album that Deaner promised quebec would be all those years ago. It's hard to tell whether Ween are sounding more manic than usual (or at least since Chocolate and Cheese) or whether it just seems like that because La Cucaracha, in terms of production, lacks the sheen of their previous few records.

Whichever way and for whatever reason, La Cucaracha is a diverse record, and one in which Ween hops between genres with their usual astounding ease. The woozy reggae of "The Fruit Man" comes instantly to mind, as does the weird bluegrass-ish "Learnin' to Love." The former, though perhaps this is a contentious statement, is the best song on the album.

Griffin Award - The Stables Theatre - 03/08/06

Free flowing flutes with bubbly billowing out of the huge white doors of the Stables Theatre. No smashing of glasses and a house facing front toward the Theatre crashes out with its arm hanging in the gutter, the belt is still clean and tight around the upper arm.

Cabanossi cubes chat with the crackers on one plate as severed lamington fingers get the cold shoulder from the biscuits on another. Odd tasting beetroot dip goes head-to-head against the curry flavour and its the latter that wins with a drool slick coming off the edges. Wetness and a sinking feeling for the bright red loser in this competition.

National Security and The Art of Taxidermy - Downstairs Theatre, Seymour Centre - 23/09/05

The Downstairs Theatre seats patrons on a massively steep incline. Distance between the rear wall and the lip of the stage is remarkably close. Intimate with a hint of blood letting for the altitude of the back row. Flooring is hollow, a medium weight to steps giving the stands a shaky feel.

Nobody touches the terrorism handbooks on the table outside. Nobody save for those looking for the bins.
