Throwing towels; Sydney Kings vs Brisbane Bullets - 2006/07 NBL Semi-Finals Game 2 - 22/02/07

Sambol at the ready and it's a dicey flavour of burning hotness gracing the lips and tongue to deceive on actual temperature. Very much the pain threshold of testing fatigue. Breaking point past here and no lines in the grains of rice. Tasty fat lips and counter time to swap coins aplenty for the hole in the pocket holds nothing more than disappointment. And no coins.

Burn the floor; Sydney Kings vs Brisbane Bullets - Entertainment Centre - 17/09/05

A littering of moon cakes on discount mark another festival that goes on by. Milling around the outside of the Entertainment Centre is down. People are all but absent. Nothing in the clouds that are just waiting to crack open hours later. With a head full of foam and moss, everything is on mute. Everything.

The Bullets of Brisbane break out the bank and bill the first bucket of the night. Mark Worthington looks like a development player, all unassuming, blending into the background. Teaming up with Ben Knight, they deliver a frenzy with an attack that sees them all over the board. Bobby Brennan and Michael Hill are an imposing set, but the Brisbane take a breath too long in the first. Rolan Roberts dunks with a force and ownership that sets Mark Bradtke on the back foot of intimidation. Kings up easily on the second half of the first quarter with 30 to 23.

roc tha block; Kings v Bullets - Semi Finals: Game 1 - Entertainment Centre - 01/03/05

Smacks of inequality this thing with time. A rhyme is fine if made in line. Wait long enough and the monorails will count the minutes for you.

From the side, Ben Knight sneaks in to start off the racket. The Kings and Bullets tip back and forth with the hosts coming off slightly better. Snapping wrists play up the passing game, wild and fervent are the hands of Kings. Before another breath is drawn, Jason Smith is up again stopping and popping for the easy shots. Rolan Roberts' rather highly visible mouth guard suggests some biff will occur. Simply easy threes from the Queenslanders were quickly gone and eaten into the efforts. Caught in the lights, the visitors are just holding on to make sure they're in the right place before the quarter ends off at 27 to 22.

Turn around; Sydney Kings vs Brisbane Bullets - Entertainment Centre - 17/10/04

Rapped knuckles near bleeding lead into the night. Jade collects tickets made two hours before the tip-off that fall back two rows against a Wednesday night in which they were bought one hour prior. Empty is a feeling that covers the stadium with few people actually bustling about aimlessly in the lead up. Seating in the red sea within shows a grand void behind the southern baseline, a smattering of souls taking the sidelines to incrementally fill the numbers.

Songs on the playlist are starting to get better and more current as a few new tracks are heard in the time before the start of the game. Black Eyed Peas, Guy Sebastian and Maroon 5 get a spin, as does a forgotten track that burns as the skips are too much to bear. Their absence in the first quarter makes hearing the game calls and voices of the players and coaches pretty clear.

Cracker Box; Kings vs Bullets - Entertainment Centre - Semi-Finals: Game 1 - 13/03/04

Thirty minutes to tip-off, Jade and I were waiting around Door 7 of the Entertainment Centre to the news that by a stroke of luck, our contact, Adam, scored ticket upgrades to a corporate box right on court side. A ticket for ticket swap. What was going to be a viewing up in the midsection of the thickly scattered audience graduated into seats between the boxes of Macquarie Bank and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Two rows, connected in groups of four, the chairs offered nothing in the way of slouching comfort. Cushions on the back and seat of the chairs were padded enough to hold off from the hard plastic yet soft enough to allow for hard punches to connect with the red moulding. Postured into a fixed face-front position, turning around to focus on the action up and down the court falls more upon the neck than upper torso. Careless twisting pops you off the seat.

All the Small Things; Kings vs Bullets - Entertainment Centre - 16/01/04

Particles of air wisping out of the vents in the car were the signal to a journey's start. Snorting headfuls of the visible mists only managed to kick the brain cells into a snap. At the halfway mark to the Entertainment Centre a hint of gunpowder started and stopped just as soon. Constant adjustments to the temperature managed to get the windscreen fogged up on both sides of the dial. The rotting fruits and vegetables of the above Paddy's Market were negligible yet gaining strength. Jade chose the Haymarket car park and commented on the sheer spookiness of the stairwell. A stairwell that led people straight into the oncoming path of one of the city's light rail cars. Friday night and the crowd was in full strength outside of the box office and flooding the nearby burger joints of McDonalds and Hungry Jack's. Picking up fries was faster than collecting two tickets to the game. Tickets, which thanks to the change in the system over to Ticketmaster7 from Ticketek looked like novelty counterfeits.

Filling up both sides of the court, a huge expanse of red seats vacant on the far end sectioned between the two. Less than two thirds of the capacity from the sheer average of figures turned numbers. Nearly a year between outings, it looked like a whole new arena. Last year they were held under naming rights by telecom NTG and this year travel agency Trendwest. The Heydon Harlequins were now the Philips Harlequins and a selection of new stickers adorned the court floor. Announcer Rodney O was also gone in and his place some Grant guy and his roving sidekick in a yellow cap. The lineup it self was slightly altered and tonight marked the debut of fresh new import Chris Carrawell.
