Not So Live Music

It can boil down to the question on whether or not the distillation of the raw energy of sound in a open space competes well with that of the closed session. It may even determine the movement of the masses or the travel of the bits downstream to the many peer-to-peer network jackers. Jacked in and into the stream of consciousness that can be given and taken from the aural stimulants found breathing and pulsating on the shiny side of things to come. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, regrets and misgivings for the future to come.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - B-Sides & Rarities

Belvedere Jehosophat - Tuesday, June 21, 2005

Whatever one might think of Nick Cave there is no doubt that he is a gifted songwriter and an amazing performer. B-Sides & Rarities is a 3-CD box set that brings together, funnily enough, all of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ B-Sides & Rarities.

When Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds hit their stride the results are breathtaking: the acoustic version of “The Mercy Seat,” for example, is chilling in its intensity; the epic “O’Malley’s Bar,” which sees the narrator of the song brutally slaughtering the occupants of the aforementioned O’Malley’s Bar is guiltily hilarious; “Time Jesum Transeuntum Et Non Riverentum” sees eerie violins out-eeried by an eerier narrative; etc...

Revolting Cocks - You Goddamned Son of a Bitch - Live at the Metro, Chicago [A/B]

Belvedere Jehosophat - Tuesday, June 21, 2005

You Goddamned Son of a Bitch, part of Rykodisc’s recent reissue series, is a re-mastered Revolting Cocks concert performed on September 4, 1987 at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago.

The majority of the songs found on this double album are taken from RevCo’s debut, Big Sexy Land, which is something of a relief, as the band became increasingly sillier as they progressed into their career.

The Mars Patrol - Turn it Around EP

Jimmy Weasel - Saturday, June 11, 2005

Apparently, The Mars Patrol have been touring through various countries and are far from being underground. Unless you're in Australia. Then there's a large chance you'll have never heard of them. Unfortunate, considering that they are certainly worth repeat listening.

This 5 song piece of work appeared at my location eerily quick - perhaps the Scottish & Australian postal systems work better in cahoots than some other foreign mailing institutions.

Galaxie 500 - The Portable Galaxie 500

Belvedere Jehosophat - Wednesday, June 8, 2005

The Portable Galaxie 500 is an excellent introduction to this enormously talented yet criminally underrated band of the late 80s – a band whose minimalist, textured sounds has influenced countless others since.

Included are a handful of tracks taken from the three studio albums that Galaxie 500 released coupled with one track each from a live album and a rarities album. The CD also comes with a multimedia clip of “Blue Thunder.”

Peabody - The New Violence

Belvedere Jehosophat - Tuesday, May 17, 2005

With The New Violence Peabody have turned in a darker, angrier record than I think a lot of people expected, and, in doing so, have released what is so far easily the best CD of 2005.

The truth is that Peabody was going to have to do something to make us want to listen to this record; after all a direct reproduction of the Peabody live sound onto a compact disc would be exciting but, also, ultimately disappointing.

Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth

Alex Yamakazi - Wednesday, May 4, 2005

You almost have to feel sorry for Trent Reznor. He is an incredibly smart businessman with a real talent for marketing himself, but making a NIN album at this point must be a daunting task considering the weight of fan expectation that has to be dealt with. It's like making a Star Wars or Lord of the Rings movie... there's no way you're going to please everyone and your fans are as pedantic and picky as they are passionate.

Unlike the sweeping epic that was The Fragile, With Teeth is by no means a paradigm shift. If you expect it to be a huge leap forward you will be disappointed. If you accept and appreciate it as a further exploration and refinement of concepts that have been visited in previous albums you will be rewarded.

Beck - Guero

Alex Yamakazi - Wednesday, April 27, 2005

Beck was always an artist that I felt a social pressure to appreciate. Friends constantly recommended his work to me and whilst I enjoyed his albums I never really felt a strong connection. He always seemed a bit self consciously smug, arty and purposefully clever... perhaps I'm just suspicious of people with the last name of Hansen. I guess it's Hansen not Hanson but damn it's close enough to scare the bejesus out of me.

After listening to Beck's latest offering, Guero, I now understand the hype. I was wrong. The man is a genius.

Stereolab - Margerine Eclipse

Belvedere Jehosophat - Tuesday, April 26, 2005

Needless to say, Stereolab have, with Margerine Eclipse, crafted another batch of exceptional songs that at the same time manage to somehow sound both cheerful and melancholic.

The band is back in top form here: Laetitia Sadier’s vocals are as gorgeous and plaintive as ever, and Tim Gane’s music, still toying with krautrock and faux-lounge, is as creative as it has always been.

Mouse on Mars - Radical Connector

Alex Yamakazi - Wednesday, February 9, 2005

After 10 years producing electronica, Mouse on Mars have managed to gain a strong following by producing a sound that is both unique to the band and unique to each release. We have come to expect an evolving sound from Mouse on Mars and Radical Connector again shows that MoM is not afraid to experiment and move forward.

Aptly named, Radical Connector explores the concept of juxtaposition. Throughout the album we are constantly presented with contrasts - warm ambient sounds and warm ambient vocals meet with cold digitised vocals and choppy electronic sounds. Radical Connector also showcases a much more vocal sound than previous MoM releases.

Gwen Stefani - L.A.M.B

Alex Yamakazi - Friday, January 28, 2005

Love Angel Music Baby... Let's Amass More Bucks... Let's Advertise My Brand... Lamely Advertising Materialistic Bollocks... Learn About Music Bimbo... Let's All Market Blondes... Lame And Musically Bad...

Drawn by the siren-like twin forces of being a Gwen fan from way back and the catchy single "What you waiting for" I bought this album fully expecting to enjoy it. Many listens in I'm still TRYING to enjoy it and failing miserably. Not only does this album disappoint musically it's also sad to see a woman who was once an icon for strong, independent, stylish women allow herself to be so blatantly commercialised.

Where in Kentucky - Mammoth Cave National Park
Monstrously, and seemingly neverending, sitting under the home ground of Colonel Sanders, the world's largest cave system. Yucatan comes nowhere close. Not even Cocklebiddy poses a threat. No comparison. Small holes looking up at a big fat long one. Sadly, with possible age and lack of food, no minotaurs to be found within the lime walls.
Homebrew Diary - Wheatbeer of misery
If what can turn a foul mood around becomes the harbinger of the foul mood, what happens next? Turn it into a learning experience. And when that learning curve makes a late break over the plate, you'd better start to swing away.
Homebrew Diary - Blackrock IPA + Hops
It doesn't take a big man to admit that he drinks. It takes a big man to get wasted and perform impromptu sermons naked from a balcony; raving upon the ravages of the insanity of stata bylaws and noisy offspring in adjoining arpartments...
