Live Music

Deterioration of the ear drums are just one of the many benefits of seeing a live act in the flesh. Groping and drunkenness are just some of the factors which may ward you off such a feat in human endurance and mislocated pain. Squeezing a watermelon through an aperture of a lemon would kill most humans if the lemon itself was not as supple as it needed to be in order to stretch to allow for such a magnificent feat. Pity the pain and the struggle of missing out on a set given by the rockers of choice. Make it yours.

The Geek Show (Fantomas, Melvins, Tomahawk) 13/12/2003

Jimmy Weasel - Saturday, December 20, 2003

Mike Patton & his wacky band of band members graced the country once again for a smattering of his weirdness. This time, both his side projects played at the same venue on the same day; but not at the same time. Some might say "but they're too similar to distinguish." Well, possibly, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good show.

Impossible to judge though, as the horde of Robbie Williams fanaticals had any and all nearby parking bays chock full to the gunnels, and so some of us missed the Fantomas set; causing great lamentations & cursing and furious beatings of steering wheels. 50,000 of the ugly buggers would also cause havoc on the way out, and, all trying to leave from the one driveway at the same time, which began a log-jam of tooting fools that lasted well over an hour.

The Shins - The Gaelic Club - 09/12/03

Belvedere Jehosophat - Thursday, December 11, 2003

I never particularly liked The Shins, certainly not enough to bother buying an album, but, driven by boredom, I decided to check them out anyway. The supports acts were Starkey (Starky?) and Iron & Wine.

I left home too late to catch Starky (Starkey?) and I was kind of disappointed because there’s a song of theirs on the radio that I don’t entirely hate.

Kool Keith - The Gaelic Club - 4/12/03

Belvedere Jehosophat - Tuesday, December 9, 2003

Somewhere along the line—and I don’t know if it came like a thief in the night—the sweaty, meat-composed drunken idiots that I used to encounter in heavy metal shows have migrated to the hip hop shows.

I guess it makes sense; let’s face it, with a change of clothes and a haircut the idiot yahoos of heavy metal shows could easily infiltrate a hip hop show. The question is why, I mean, I thought that they thought that music wasn’t no good unless it had a killer guitar solo.

Homebake - the agony, clean ecstasy and WTF clean toilets and plenty of tp??!??

Alex Yamakazi - Monday, December 8, 2003

The hated rays of the sun shone on Homebake through a thick and deceitful bank of cloud. Not content with punishing the partygoers with stealth sunburn the almighty spiteful one also smote us with rain.

I'm not sure that I felt totally safe with the abscence of the anti-lemming cattle run maze barriers we had at Livid but since I didn't at any stage feel the urge to run willy nilly into any inanimate objects thus bringing myself to a messy sticky end, perhaps it was ok.

Strapping Young Lad - 31/10/2003

Jimmy Weasel - Sunday, November 2, 2003

Forget the opening acts; not because they weren't good, but because they didn't really prepare anyone for the Devin Townsend onslaught.

I've never seen the Metro come alive like it did for this man. It was definitely the loudest show I've seen in years, with so much energy coming from such a strange looking fellow.

Turbonegro (& hardons) Gaelic Club 17/10/03

Jimmy Weasel - Sunday, October 19, 2003

If you'd have told me that 11 hours after the show I'd still be pulling some clumps of blood from my hair & finding feathers stuck to my shoes, I'd have said you were insane. Beer getting sprayed by a guitarist or an excitable fan is a given, yet the blood and plumage was a definate surprise.

"it is not pig blood, as they told you on the radio" said the singer, trying to quell a smirk. "it is...dolphin blood."

A slew, a veritable slew, of concerts. (For Allen Ginsberg) (For Quentin Tarantino)

Belvedere Jehosophat - Sunday, October 19, 2003

Wednesday – 15/10/03 - (One Way Out - Gyroscope - Less Than Jake)

On Wednesday I saw Less Than Jake supported by Gyroscope and One Way Out.

One Way Out were a generic new school punk band that sounded like a billion and one other generic new school punk bands. Please, please, write another song about a girl or unrequited love because it’s become readily apparent that the rich tapestry of music that you are contributing to has yet to tear under the weight of your seemingly endless bloated cliches. And we can’t have that, can we?

All things dark & sweaty - Soilwork (+ frankenbok and Stronger than Hate) 13/9/03

Jimmy Weasel - Sunday, September 14, 2003

The time on the ticket said 8pm, so I made sure I was there with ample time. I wanted to get "the feel" of the place before the crazed metal antics began. A huge queue of metal fans told me that the doors weren't open yet, and they were to be paraded along Devonshire street for the passing people to stare at and think negative thoughts.

The Gaelic club is an intimate venue, to be sure. There is one great pillar blocking the complete view of the stage, but nothing drastic. Stronger than Hate were only on stage for 40 minutes, but still managed to belt out a stack of songs that got the audience jumping and cursing.

The Butterfly Effect/Melodessey - The Annandale - 27/8/03

Alex Yamakazi - Wednesday, August 27, 2003

The Annandale was eerily devoid of the normal hipster crowd enjoying their guilty dose of rock (purely for ironic reasons of course!) on Friday night. Perhaps they're used to just swanning into the place and didn't have the tickets to get into Butterfly Effect's sellout gig. Perhaps Butterfly Effect, who seem to be on the cusp of making it big, are just not underground enough for them anymore. Instead the place was packed with a wide and good natured assortment of cheerful punters out to enjoy the night. Goodwill abounded and abounded some more as the night and the drinking progressed.

There was another support act before Melodessy but I got there late because of dramas involved with arranging tickets for everyone. I was drunk, I can't remember who they were. Sorry.

Caringbah Bizzos: Like a phoenix 'n stuff

Jimmy Weasel - Monday, July 14, 2003

Caringbah "Bizzos", or businessman's club used to be small. And nigh upon dilapidated. As a venue for musical performance and the viewing of such things, it was not a personal favourite. Nor was it the favourite of quite a few bands. Pillars of Annoyance were strewn about the place, bad acoustics, bad light, smokey air. All the things negative that could be associated with a venue were, and quite tightly packed into this tiny room.

All this has changed.

Sounds of Coma - Debut Gig - 3rd July - The Harp

Alex Yamakazi - Sunday, July 13, 2003

Sydney band Sounds of Coma played their debut gig at the Harp on the 3rd of July. They were supported by Four Kings and Indiana.

By the time I had gathered my entourage, Four Kings had been and gone. Indiana took to the stage just as I walked in. Despite a powerful vocal performance they lacked originality and variety in their material. It wasn't a bad performance, It was just very cock rock. Tight tight jeans, wifebeater shirts and an overload of testosterone.

The Folk Implosion - 19/6/03 - The Gaelic Club

Belvedere Jehosophat - Thursday, June 26, 2003

The Folk Implosion is Lou Barlow, Imaad Wasif and Russell Pollard.

I'd been putting off reviewing this gig for so long because I wasn't sure that I would be able to review it with any degree of objectivity.

Inner Styles - The Roxbury - Sat 10th May

Alex Yamakazi - Monday, May 12, 2003

I'm a fussy snotty cliquey type of person when it comes to a night out. Firstly I am loathe to travel more than 15 minutes from my lair, secondly my tolerance for idiocy is low...rather...low...indeed and thirdly I am a music Nazi and.... COVER CHARGES ARE THE ENEMY!!!

I'm always delighted to find a great night out and Inner Styles at the Roxbury has ticked all my boxes! The venue is a gem. Outside looks like a slightly seedy pub. Inside it's sleek yet accessible with heaps of space for dancing, pool or just having a chat with your friends. While the music could be heard throughout the venue it was soft enough away from the dance floor for a conversation to be had. For those wanting to do a little booty shaking there were cloaking facilities. Drink prices were reasonable.

The crowd were funky yet friendly and almost totally non pretentious. There was a notable absence of yobs and (amazing stories) not a trace of "fulsik" to be found. It's great to be able to have a dance without some greasy moron coming up behind you and attempting some kind of sexual assault.

Where in Kentucky - Mammoth Cave National Park
Monstrously, and seemingly neverending, sitting under the home ground of Colonel Sanders, the world's largest cave system. Yucatan comes nowhere close. Not even Cocklebiddy poses a threat. No comparison. Small holes looking up at a big fat long one. Sadly, with possible age and lack of food, no minotaurs to be found within the lime walls.
Homebrew Diary - Wheatbeer of misery
If what can turn a foul mood around becomes the harbinger of the foul mood, what happens next? Turn it into a learning experience. And when that learning curve makes a late break over the plate, you'd better start to swing away.
Homebrew Diary - Blackrock IPA + Hops
It doesn't take a big man to admit that he drinks. It takes a big man to get wasted and perform impromptu sermons naked from a balcony; raving upon the ravages of the insanity of stata bylaws and noisy offspring in adjoining arpartments...
